History:

Land was purchased and cleared, with construction of a grass runway so that "the entire area will be available for the use of airplanes" in April 1930. The airport was dedicated on September 3, 1930 with over 15,000 people in attendance.

The existing stone hangar, 80’ x 100’, was constructed by WPA (Works Progress Administration) workers in 1938.

A paved east-west runway, 75’ x 3900’, was constructed during the summer of 1949.

Scheduled passenger service with the Douglas DC-3 by Wisconsin Central Airlines began December 1, 1949.

The terminal building was constructed during the summer of 1960.

A new runway, 150’ x 6500’, was constructed in 1978.

In 1978 Gogebic County entered into an agreement with Iron County for joint management of the airport. The Airport Board currently consists of 9 members, 6 from Gogebic County and 3 from Iron County (members of the Board are listed above in the letterhead).

Three new hangers were constructed in 1987, 1989, and 1995.

An engineering firm has been hired and plans are being drawn for the construction of a north-south runway. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2002.
