A premier example of the symbiotic relationship of forest management and recreation can be found in the county forest land of Gogebic County Michigan.  Well over 50 thousand acres of land under the management of the Forestry and Parks Commission has generated millions in revenue from timber harvesting but yet yield a multitude of recreation opportunity.

Responsible and creative forest management has created thousands of acres of beautiful forestland enhanced animal habitat and unlimited recreation opportunity.  Open for public use and a by-product of forest management is miles of forest roads and trails available for hiking, biking, skiing and ORV use.  Clubs and organizations have aided in the maintenance of these roads and trails by marking trails and clearing blow downs.  Cooperation and guidance from the Forestry and Parks Commission in the use and maintenance of these trails has allowed for the development of a multitude of recreation and sporting opportunities for residents and visitors to Gogebic County.

The Forestry and Parks Commission is also in charge of the County Park System, which includes two major campgrounds.  Gogebic Park, located on Lake Gogebic and Little Girls Point, located on the Shores of Lake Superior are examples of some of the best-managed parks in the State.  The vast area of County Forest they are located in complements these parks.  There are few places in the Country that offer the camping and recreation opportunities found here.
